Edo

Are you familiar with the capital city of Edo? With a population of over 38 million in its greater metropolitan area? Probably not, unless you know that Edo is the former name of Tokyo. Edo became Japan’s capital in 1603 and its name survived until 1868, when the Tokagawa shogunate was toppled and the new government renamed it Tokyo or ‘Eastern Capital’.

This shirt is an ode to the rich culture of Japan. We have a particular affinity for the centuries-old art of bonsai and made sure to include a beautiful example on the front. It was also inspired by our fascination with major cities that have experienced name changes over the years. Constantinople to Istanbul, Saigon to Ho Chi Minh City, Yerba Buena to San Francisco. As two residents of Waterloo, TX and New Amsterdam, NY, of course we would love this idea.

Your purchase will support YouMeWe and their mission to provide support and resources to the 30,000+ children who are growing up in institutionalized homes across Japan.
