These New York Knickerbockers were one of the very first baseball teams in the history of the sport. Active in the mid-19th century, the Knickerbockers helped to popularize our nascent pastime by formalizing rules, drawing large crowds, and (near and dear to our heart) creating the first ever uniforms. As baseball grew in popularity around the country, the Knickerbockers struggled to stay relevant as nationally-focused leagues assumed leadership. Despite disbanding in the early 1870s, their legacy lives on in the NBA’s New York Knicks.

Their home field was a park in Hoboken called Elysian Fields, which was a popular destination for New Yorkers during this time period and was an innovative kind of public amenity. According to a baseball historian, "Elysian Fields [was] a kind of laboratory of transportation, leisure and recreation. Disneyland, Central Park, Coney Island and the modern baseball park can all claim the Elysian Fields as an ancestor." Sounds like our kind of spot.
